The Saudi Hypertension Management Society (SHMS) hosts a focused evening webinar, "Update in Resistant Hypertension", on Tuesday 1 September 2026 from 8:45 to 10:00 pm (Riyadh time), delivered live on Microsoft Teams and free to join.
Resistant hypertension — blood pressure that stays above target despite three antihypertensive agents at optimal doses, including a diuretic — remains one of the most common and highest-risk problems in Saudi outpatient practice. This session reviews how to confirm true resistance and separate it from pseudo-resistance caused by non-adherence, white-coat effect, inaccurate measurement technique or interfering drugs; when and how to use ambulatory and home blood pressure monitoring; screening for secondary causes such as primary aldosteronism, renal artery stenosis and obstructive sleep apnoea; and the evidence-based treatment sequence, including the role of mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists as fourth-line therapy and where newer options and device-based approaches now sit.
Speaker Dr. Tawfik Albassam, Consultant Internal Medicine and Hypertensivist, leads the update, with Dr. Bader Al-Mustafa, Consultant Family Medicine and Hypertensivist, moderating the discussion and live Q&A — a deliberately practical pairing that keeps the content useful for both hospital-based internists and primary care physicians managing hypertension day to day.
The webinar is organised by SHMS under the supervision of the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS), in collaboration with the International Society of Hypertension (ISH), the World Hypertension League and the National Center for Non-Profit Sector.
Who should attend: internal medicine physicians, cardiologists, family medicine and primary care physicians, nephrologists, residents and clinical pharmacists involved in blood pressure management. Registration is free through the official Microsoft Teams event link.
