Severe hypertension with acute kidney injury, thrombocytopenia and microangiopathic hemolytic anemia is a presentation that regularly reaches nephrology, cardiology, hematology, emergency and intensive care teams at the same time — and the treatment paths diverge sharply. Aggressive blood pressure control alone may be sufficient in hypertensive emergency-driven TMA, while complement-mediated aHUS demands prompt recognition and complement-directed therapy to preserve renal function and avoid dialysis dependence. This webinar unpacks the shared pathophysiology of endothelial injury and complement activation, the diagnostic sequence that separates the two entities (including ADAMTS13, complement studies, renal biopsy considerations and the role of genetic testing), and how to act when results are still pending.
The lecture is delivered by Professor Fernando Caravaca-Fontán, MD, PhD, Professor of Clinical Nephrology at 12 de Octubre University Hospital in Madrid, whose clinical research work spans glomerular disease and complement-mediated kidney disorders.
