"Atypical Parkinsonism in Practice: How to Recognize, Differentiate, Manage" is an International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society (MDS)-endorsed DWEP (Developing World Education Program) course, held on behalf of the MDS European Section (MDS-ES) at the Istanbul Health and Technology University (İSTÜN) Faculty of Medicine in Beyoğlu, Istanbul, Türkiye, from 4 to 6 December 2026.
The course is directed by Prof. Yildiz Degirmenci, member of the MDS-ES Executive Committee, together with Prof. Kailash Bhatia, one of the world's leading authorities on movement disorders. Over three days it offers a unique opportunity for neurology residents, general neurologists, movement disorders neurologists and allied healthcare professionals to meet international opinion leaders and national experts, and to discuss atypical parkinsonism from phenomenology to diagnosis and treatment, including the most recent advances.
Atypical parkinsonian syndromes — such as progressive supranuclear palsy, multiple system atrophy, corticobasal syndrome and dementia with Lewy bodies — remain among the most challenging diagnoses in neurology. Recognising their early clinical signs, differentiating them from Parkinson's disease and from one another, and managing patients and families across the disease course demands strong phenomenological skills and familiarity with emerging biomarkers and imaging. The course addresses these practical challenges through a mix of lectures, case-based teaching and interaction with faculty.
All attendees are encouraged to play an active role by interacting with faculty members in a hospitable, collegial atmosphere, deepening their understanding both theoretically and practically. The course is also an excellent networking opportunity for clinicians across the region.
The official course page provides the course overview, full scientific programme, faculty members, registration and accommodation details and contact information.
