The session covers patient selection, preoperative mapping, and technique selection — rectal shaving vs. discoid excision vs. segmental resection — for deep infiltrating disease, with explicit discussion of functional outcomes (LARS, sexual function, fertility, quality of life). Panellists review contemporary data on complication profiles (e.g. fistula, anastomotic leak) and risk-mitigation strategies (selective diversion, intraoperative assessment, nerve-sparing), illustrated through operative videos and joint colorectal/gynaecology case panels.
Learning objectives
• Select the appropriate operative strategy (shaving vs. discoid vs. segmental) based on lesion size, depth, distance from the anal verge, multiplicity, and patient goals.
• Construct a multidisciplinary operative plan with gynaecology (and urology when needed), emphasising dual-team approaches for complex resections.
