    About this event

Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient (CCrISP®) is the Royal College of Surgeons of England's two-day provider course, delivered on site at the Academy of Sciences (AOS) Center, Riyadh, on 20–21 November 2026 (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM). The course was developed and quality-assured by RCS England.

CCrISP explores the skills and knowledge needed to look after surgical patients who are deteriorating, or at risk of doing so. Participants build the theoretical knowledge and the practical and interpersonal skills to assess and manage patients systematically, using the CCrISP three-stage algorithm. Teaching combines simulated patient scenarios, case-based skill stations, small-group sessions, demonstrations and a lecture, with mandatory pre-course eLearning (manual reading and online MCQs).

    Learning objectives

    • Systematically and comprehensively assess critically ill surgical patients
    • Recognise the deteriorating patient and identify those most at risk
    • Understand the subtlety and variety of critical illness presentation and how to avoid complications
    • Deliver multidisciplinary care, work effectively with the care team, and communicate with patients and relatives

    Programme highlights

Day 1: introduction to CCrISP and patient assessment; faculty demonstration; participant-led scenarios; small groups on respiratory failure, tracheostomy management, wound and stoma care, perioperative cardiac disorders, shock, professional skills and acute kidney injury; nutrition. Day 2: small groups on the unwell surgical patient, ward dilemmas, pain management, respiratory care and chest imaging; course summary; demonstration assessment video; assessed moulage scenarios and virtual ward round; feedback.

Target audience: surgeons, ICU and anaesthesia doctors — most suitable for postgraduate years three or four and relevant to all specialties.

Accreditation: 14 CME hours; the flyer lists Academy of Sciences, RCS England and SCFHS.

Fee: SAR 3,218 (reduced from SAR 4,699). Participants must create a free RCS England account and provide their RCS contact number after registering.
