Intraocular Tamponades in Vitreoretinal Surgery is the 32nd session of the Accredited Ophthalmic Lecture Series at King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital & Research Center (KKESH & RC) in Riyadh. The lecture takes place on Tuesday 27 October 2026 from 13:00 to 15:30 on the 4th floor of the KKESH & RC SRC Building, and is delivered by Marcos Rubio, MD.
Tamponade agents are central to modern retinal surgery. After vitrectomy for retinal detachment, macular hole and other vitreoretinal conditions, surgeons rely on gases and silicone oils to support the retina while it heals. Choosing the right agent — and managing the patient afterwards — directly affects anatomical success, visual recovery and the risk of complications. This session gives a structured, practical overview of the options available.
Learning objectives:
- Describe the types, properties and mechanisms of action of commonly used intraocular tamponade agents.
- Differentiate the indications and clinical applications of gas and silicone oil tamponades in vitreoretinal surgery.
- Recognise postoperative considerations and potential complications associated with intraocular tamponades.
The lecture is designed for the whole eye-care team. The organiser lists a broad target audience: ophthalmology, internal medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation, nursing, pharmacy, epidemiology, health information, health education, laboratory health assistants, and optometry including cornea, clinical contact lens, ophthalmology technology, contact lens, orthoptics and occupational health and safety.
Accreditation: the session carries 2 SCFHS CME hours (accreditation number ACA-20260003069). Separately, it is approved for 1 IJCAHPO Group A credit for allied ophthalmic personnel. The two credit types are awarded by different bodies and are not combined.
Registration is through the organiser's online form (linked from the QR code on the official flyer). For fee enquiries, contact the KKESH Learning & Development Department on 011 840 1247 or training@kkesh.med.sa.
