Sample Size Calculation in Medical Research is a one-day course from KAIMRC Academy at King Abdullah International Medical Research Center. It runs on Thursday 29 October 2026 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, both on-site in Conference Room A at KAIMRC in Riyadh and online through Microsoft Teams.
Choosing the right sample size is one of the most common stumbling blocks in health research. Too small a sample leaves a study underpowered and unable to answer its question; too large wastes resources and exposes more participants than necessary. This course takes participants through the reasoning and the practical tools behind the calculation, and applies them to their own projects.
Course objectives:
- Explain the principles underlying sample size calculations.
- Use practical tools to calculate sample sizes across different research fields.
- Determine appropriate sample sizes based on study objectives.
- Explore statistical power, effect size, precision and sample size within the context of participants' own research studies.
Speakers: Dr. Seena Thomas and Dr. Bijesh Kumar, biostatisticians in the Department of Population Health at KAIMRC.
Who should attend: postgraduate students and research trainees in the health sciences; clinical, epidemiological and public health researchers; faculty members, research investigators and research coordinators; and data analysts, biostatisticians and healthcare professionals involved in research.
Fees (SAR): non-students SAR 200; students SAR 100. Separate registration links are provided for each category on the KSAU-HS events portal. Registration closes on 27 October 2026.
