    A one-hour scientific lecture hosted by the Deanship of Postgraduate Education at King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (KSAU-HS) in Riyadh, aimed at graduate students and researchers.

    The talk

    Protein biomarkers sit at the centre of modern precision medicine. Where genomics tells us what could happen, the proteome reflects what is happening in a patient right now — which makes circulating proteins some of the most informative signals available for early detection, patient stratification, prognosis and treatment monitoring. High-throughput proteomic platforms can now measure thousands of proteins from a small plasma sample, turning biomarker discovery from a single-target exercise into a population-scale science.

    This session walks through how protein biomarkers are discovered, validated and translated: the technology behind large-scale proteomic profiling, study design and sample quality, the statistics of separating a real signal from noise, and the long road from a discovery panel to a test that changes clinical decisions. Examples are drawn from oncology, cardiometabolic disease, immunology and healthy ageing, alongside the growing role of multi-omics — combining proteomics with genomics and other data layers — in national precision-health programmes.

    Speaker

    Dr. Sarantis Chlamydas, PhD — Head of Human Health and MultiOmics Strategy at Thermo Fisher Scientific (previously Global Scientific Director for MultiOmics at Olink Proteomics), Research Assistant Professor at the University Research Institute of Athens and an affiliated investigator at the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens. He has published extensively on epigenetics, chromatin regulation and proteomics, and works with international consortia on biomarker discovery in oncology, immunology and ageing.
