    About this event

    Overview

The DaleelFM Lectures Project returns with Dietary and Sports Supplements in Primary Care, a live online lecture on Tuesday, 18 August 2026 at 7:00 PM (KSA).

Supplements are one of the most common things patients bring to a primary-care consultation and one of the least structured topics in family medicine training. Patients arrive with multivitamins, protein powders, creatine, herbal blends and performance products bought online, often without telling their physician — and often alongside prescription medication. This lecture gives family physicians a practical framework for that conversation: when supplementation is genuinely indicated, when it is unnecessary, and when it is actively harmful.

    Learning objectives

    • Differentiate deficiency treatment and risk-based prevention from wellness and performance supplementation
    • Apply a targeted primary-care approach to assessing common vitamin and mineral deficiencies
    • Recommend appropriate supplement ingredients, doses, duration and monitoring
    • Evaluate the evidence for commonly used sports and trending supplements
    • Recognize interactions, laboratory interference, contamination, toxicity and indications for referral

The session emphasises the difference between correcting a documented deficiency and treating a marketing claim, and covers the practical pitfalls that show up in clinic: biotin interfering with thyroid and troponin assays, unregulated products contaminated with undeclared pharmaceuticals, vitamin D and iron over-supplementation, and the interaction risk of herbal products in patients on anticoagulants or chronic disease therapy.

    Speaker

Dr. Abdullah Khaled Alhwimani — Assistant Consultant of Family Medicine; Manager, Health Governance and Transformation.
